How to go about cutting your hedge
So you’ve read our previous blog about what to do before you start cutting your hedge (if not you can read it here) and now you’re ready to start cutting away.
If your hedge is particularly large or is going to require a fair bit of trimming, you might want to tidy as you go to reduce the level of the task later. By positioning a sheet on the floor around the base of the hedge before starting will allow you to collect the cutting much easier. (This is also a pretty good tip even if your hedge isn’t that large)
Time to get the trimmers, first move towards your hedge and position yourself a comfortable distance away from the hedge and make sure you can maintain a steady footing. If using an electric trimmer, make sure the cable is always behind you out of the way and cut away from the power source.
Now, holding the trimmer with both hands, activate the trimmer and start to cut your hedge from the bottom using a circular motion. Take your time and work at a comfortable speed, you don’t want to rush and cause an accident.
You’ve done the sides; it’s now time for the top of the hedge. Hold your trimmer straight out in front of you and cut in a sideways motion. If you are using steps make sure you are not reaching too far to cut the top and if your hedge is particularly tall and you’re using a telescopic pole trimmer, try to keep the blade at a 90 degree angle and take care to avoid any debris that may fall while cutting.
After cutting it is always a good idea to clean your trimmer and maintain it for future use, turn off the machine and gently remove any bits that may be in the blades or teeth but always follow the manufactures guidelines.
