Gardening tips: Why is your lawn dying?
We know how frustrating it can be when you’re trying to make your garden and lawns look attractive and nothing seems to be working! You can spend hours planting bulbs and beautiful plants and flowers, but if they’re set again a yellowing, dry, unsightly lawn, you may as well not of bothered!
Sometimes, your expectations can be unrealistic - lawns are expected to stay green year round and free of weeds, pests and diseases! But when you consider what your lawns are exposed to, it can be easy to understand why this is so improbable!
In the unpredictable UK weather, your lawns are subjected to times of drought, excessive rain, days of overcast skies, super sunny days, freezes, weekly mowing and herbicides to control weeds – plus pets and kids using them as playgrounds.
So there are many stress factors that can have an impact on the health and quality of your lawn, but here are our tips on how to maintain is as best possible -
Sunshine -
Most lawns will require around six to eight hours of sunlight each day to grow and flourish fully. When you have grass in shaded areas, you should mow your grass higher, fertilize and irrigate less, avoid heavy foot traffic and monitor closely for weeds because the turf is usually not as dense.
Mowing -
How often do you mow the lawn? How high is the blade set? Is the mower blade sharp?
FEAR NOT – we wrote a blog all about how much you should mow, when you should start mowing and everything else you need to know about this.
Watering –
Only water your lawn needs it!! Symptoms of a thirsty lawn include grass blades folding lengthwise, lawn turning a greyish colour and footprints remaining after you walk on it. The biggest mistake is that the lawn is overwatered by leaving the sprinkler on for hours! The key is to keep the roots from drying out, and grass roots are not very deep, long periods of watering wastes water and makes the lawn too wet.
Weeds -
Weeds are opportunists, so they will take advantage of a weak lawn. Herbicides are often needed to maintain a healthy turf, but only use them if a weed problem exists. Use pre-emergence herbicides if you had a problem previously.
