Winter lawn care
Now winter is well and truly here, lets see how we can protect our lawns over this potentially difficult period for the garden.
In winter, the grass does not stop growing, but it definitely slows down, if the temperature is mild in these months It can grow.
If we have a warmer winter and the sunshine is good and the ground is not hard and frozen, get on the mower and top the grass to tidy the lawn and also stimulate the growth that there may be at this time of year.
Here are some hot tips for this winter period:-
1. Ensure you take all the dead leaves off the lawn.
2 Try not to walk on the lawn when it is covered in frost.
3 Get the mower serviced nice and early to avoid the springtime rush.
4 Remove any worm casts.
5 Its worth spending time trimming the edges of the lawn, pathways and around borders.
6 Toughen your lawn up by applying a Soluble Iron product. This will provide some colour and winter hardiness, but do not apply when the grass is frozen.
7 Do not worry about removing snow from lawns, it will be fine underneath but may exhibit some 'Snow Mould' or 'Fusarium Disease' once the snow melts
8 Try to mow the lawn if ground conditions and weather conditions permit
9 Make sure you plan for spring and get ready for the weekend when you can get out into the garden again to apply a spring tonic to the lawn to help it get rid of its winter blues
