Road Fuel Duty
Anyone who uses machinery and equipment with small engines that require fuel such as chainsaws, lawnmowers, chippers, a range of forestry and gardening equipment must pay fuel tax.
There are two types of fuels available to use:
- Unleaded petrol
- Alkylate petrol
The first is the same as what is used in cars and contains various harmful elements whereas the latter is a much safer fuel with fewer harmful substances found within it. The user is subject to 99% less toxic emissions then former petrol.
Those who use this equipment occasionally may not perceive the threat of emissions as a hindrance to their health or wallet. For those who work in this industry whether it is forestry or gardening prefer to use this alkylate diesel but it comes as a price
Change.org have started a petition in an attempt abolish the unfair road fuel duty on alkylate petrol and make it more affordable for machinery operators to use.
Farmers and those who work in horticultural sector get support from the government which allows them to buy fuel at a lower price. The belief is that this should be extended to people in an industry which use fuel operated machinery, like tree surgeons, as well.
It’s not just a matter of cheaper fuel but health of the operator.
At PSM we supply a wide range of specialist equipment for gardening, allotment keeping. Some of these such as lawn mowers, cultivators, chainsaws and chippers are powered by fuel which makes them perfect for large projects where an electric battery cannot meet the same performance.
